Read on to see some of the menu highlights, and for a couple of tricks on having the best experience at Virgin River.

They do a braised brisket that just keeps me coming back. Other highlights include the fried chicken, a great taco bar, and my kids love the dessert bar (it is pretty good).

Virgin River Buffet

Virgin River Hotel & Casino has many restaurants, with Sierra’s Buffet being the most popular. Sierra’s Buffet is open 7 days a week – other casino buffets in Mesquite are open on the weekends only. Many different dishes are available including a fully stocked salad bar. Weekends include specialty dishes such as crab legs and prime rib.

Any time is a great time for the Virgin River Buffet, but their more elaborate meals on weekends are delicious and hopefully you will have a chance to hit one of those nights.

If you’re seeking a buffet during the week, Virgin River’s Sierra’s Buffet is your only choice. It is a fantastic option though; there is a reason this is the one that remains open.

Travel to Virgin River Buffet

The Virgin River’s Buffet is in the same area as the casino. It is not too bad to follow the signs.

Walking

Sierra’s Buffet is at the back of the casino section toward the center of the building. If you enter from the front of the casino, you’ll cross the casino floor and go slightly right.

When looking at the signs, it is easy to miss the directions because you’re looking for the word “buffet.”

Instead, look for “Sierra’s Buffet” and you’ll find it pretty easily.

From the Parking Lot

Any of the casino entrances give convenient access to Sierra’s- they are all within a short walk. The Virgin River is small enough that you’ll find the buffet within a few minutes.

FAQ

Can I stay all day?

No, it’s pretty common for buffets to have 90-minute to 2-hour time limits, and even if this one does not, there are still closing times during the day when the different meals are stocked and the dining area is cleaned.

What is the best time to go to Sierra’s buffet?

My favorite night is Prim Rib night! But, there isn’t one time that is better than any other. Sierra’s Buffet has great food no matter the day.

Is this the best buffet in Mesquite?

I’m never going to be able to answer that for somebody. The Virgin River’s Buffet is great, but I enjoy others as well.

If you have the chance to try all 3 casinos, I recommend it, but you can’t go wrong with the buffet at the Virgin River Casino.

Can someone just come in and not pay to eat?

You’ll have to talk to the hosts but that’s usually not allowed, especially for adults. I get there may be reasons why somebody would choose not to eat but if you can, I highly recommend trying Sierra’s Buffet.

Is there live music at the Virgin River Buffet?

No, there’s no stage or even light background music. This makes sense though- Sierra’s Buffet is a great place to enjoy some good food and have great conversations with friends and family.

Are crab legs available every day?

No, only on Friday night seafood night, and Saturday Evening prime rib and crab legs night.

If you want more seafood than just crab legs, you’ll love seafood night: salmon, oysters and more! Seafood night has many more offerings than just crab legs, and is delicious!

Is prime rib available every day?

No, it’s available on Saturday and Sunday nights. The prime rib at the Virgin River is worth the trip- delicious!

Summary & other places of interest

If you’re in Mesquite, a buffet is a must-do meal. And unless it’s on the weekend, the Virgin River’s Sierra’s Buffet is your only choice.

There are other buffets that we suggest you try as well, including the ones at the Eureka and Casablanca hotels. Those are only open on the weekend and chances are the Virgin River is your best bet.

If you’re looking for other things to do in Mesquite, some off-the-wall ideas, are the Donkey Museum, which my kids thought was wonderful, and Little Mount Rushmore.

If a breakfast buffet isn’t what you’re looking for one morning, check out Hole Foods- we love the name and adore the donuts.

Must See Digital Walking Tour of Key West /florida/digital-walking-tour-key-west-01/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 01:07:26 +0000 /?p=150 Read more]]> We’ve included a few videos of Key West Walking Tours. Check out video below for a quick summary of some destinations you can expect on your walking tour.

Check out this very thorough walking tour video from Tim Cruise (who also dives into the personality of a similarly named celebrity.)

Tim has great suggestions for a walking tour without a guide. He goes all around Key West and shows easy to follow maps.

You’ll check out restaurants like Sloppy Joe’s (he recommends the sloppy joe) and Bull on the Corner.

Margaritaville and Hard Rock Cafe are close by. I love the Margaritaville restaurants!

The walk through of the Observatory and all its butterflies is pretty incredible.

It wouldn’t be a complete tour without seeing the Southern Most Point in the United States.

He hits up the earnest Hemingway House. It’s $17 and cash only for some reason.

You’re going to get the best view of the island if you walk to the top of the lighthouse stairs.

He touches on Rocky Beach and some beautiful ocean views.

Tim finishes at Mallory Square where you see different street performers including cat & dog performers.

And finally, the sunset is gorgeous.

Yes absolutely. There is a huge variety, and you should be able to find something for everyone on your souvenir list. Even the tricky recipient will enjoy many of the items available at the market.

Can I get my items delivered to my hotel?

This will need to be worked out with the individual vendor. It isn’t common to arrange shipping though.

Summary & other Grand Cayman destinations

The Cayman Craft Market and the Bayshore mall are the 2 destinations that should take care of most of your shopping when you’re on Grand Cayman.

Of these options, because you can meet with local artisans, the market is definitely the best way to go.

If you’re planning a trip to Grand Cayman, whether it’s being in port for a day or on island for a week, check out some other ideas we have for a great vacation.

 • Sting Ray City: There are so many much more fun ways to do this than the overcrowded boats. This was 1 of my top bucket list items – hope you enjoy this world-class experience.

Key West Walking Tours (EXPERIENCE this gorgeous island!) /florida/key-west-walking-tours/ Sun, 05 Feb 2023 05:19:28 +0000 /?p=143 Read more]]> Have you ever gone somewhere amazing and didn’t learn a thing about it? DON’T DO THIS WITH KEY WEST! Instead, have a vacation with memorable experiences that you’ll be able to talk about and relive for years.

Key West Walking Tour

Walking tours of Key West are both fun and informative. They often originate around Mallory Square and take 1 – 3 hours. Walking tours send you home knowledgeable about Key West and give you the chance to meet fascinating people. You will remember this tour for a lifetime. Tours focus on history, local homes, haunted activity, food & drink, and many other aspects of Key West.

If you’re looking for a self-guided tour of Key West, check ours out in the “Self Guided Walking Tour of Key West” section below.

There are a few different styles of walking tours:

In-Person, Guided Walking Tours

An in-person walking tour of Key West will provide the most interesting and surprising experiences. A guide with local knowledge should introduce you to the different residents of the area while explaining and answering any questions.

Some of the tours include history, famous past residents, adults-only, and haunted Key West. Expect a lot of talk about Ernest Hemingway and maybe even a little about Jimmy Buffett.

Some that I recommend

Self-Guided Walking Tours

A well-written, self-guided tour will make sure you hit all the important parts of town while allowing you to stroll at your own pace.

For a curated, self-guided tour, see our section below: Self-guided walking tour of Key West.

Self-guided tours are nice because they are often less expensive and possibly free.
As with many things in life, you get what you pay for. If you pay for a self-guided tour, don’t settle for anything that isn’t packed with information and interesting stopping points.

The nice thing about self-guided tours is it’s easier to interact with your group. You’ll be able to interact with friends and family and take turns being the guide.

Depending on how much your kids like to explore, self-guided may be the best option. I encourage my children to learn to their heart’s content.

Self-guided tours of Key West let everyone immerse themselves in Key West’s history and culture.

Also, you can skip any parts that you’re not interested in and get to the highlights.

Selg-guided tours are a great option!

GPS Guided Tours of Key West

If everyone has a phone and can tap into the same lesson, this is a great option!
GPS guided tours may be a little less intimate than self-guided, but they allow everyone to participate in the tour as they prefer.

Make sure to take the headphones off and discuss the interesting points of each stopping point.
What I like about GPS tours is it takes a lot of the work out of it. I get the tour I want and then just follow directions, supplementing the tour by reading displays I’m interested in.

GPS My City’s customizable tour of Key West is a great option.

Digital

Why wait to be in Key West when you could take a digital, video walking tour of Key West right now?

You DO NOT want to skip the real thing, but getting to know Key West before you arrive will help you to know what you want to see and pick the best tour.

And daydreaming about the destination before a vacation is part of the fun!

There are decent walking tours for free already on YouTube. Check out some of these here:

I recommend watching 1 or 2 videos before a trip and then enjoying an in-person, guided Tour once you arrive.

Careful though, you may know too much about Key West and decide to move here!

Self-Guided Walking Tour of Key West

To give you a little taste of a Self Guided tour, consider the following:

Start at Mallory Square

Mallory Square Site: It’s wonderful to start in the old town, and this is convenient for those arriving on cruise ships.

Continue to

Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

205 Whitehead St, Naval Air Station Key West, FL 33040
After exploring the gardens, take a break at:

Irish Kevin’s

211 Duval St, Key West, FL 33040
This will get you over to Dual Street and is a great little watering hole. Tell them that TravelHabitz sent you!

Now that you’ve rested, start the long yet scenic walk to:

Key West Cemetery

This is going to get you moving a little bit. You may think it’s weird to visit here on vacation, but cemeteries at the ocean level are next-level interesting. They become mausoleums since they have to be above ground.

This is a pretty unique experience and worth exploring a little. There may even be some famous names.

Ernest Hemingway Home

I’m never sure if Key West would be as famous and remarkable a destination if Ernest Hemingway hadn’t lent his personal brand to it.

I guess I’ll let you decide.

Make sure to read all the signage around the home, and maybe pick up a copy of Farewell to Arms before you travel.

Captain Tony’s Saloon

Another great watering hole after you’ve had quite a walk.

Why do a walking tour?

It’s too easy to go somewhere and have the same experience you would have had at home. Traveling hundreds of miles to eat at the same style of restaurants or the same type of food, not learning anything, not experiencing any of the unique experiences Key West has to offer.

Walking tours give force you to intimately experience what is unique about Key West. When you return home, if you can’t describe Key West’s unique drinks, delicious food, and what makes Key West special, then your vacation has failed.

Key West is much more than a relaxing, tropical vacation.

Who doesn’t want to go to Key West? Everyone does it’s gorgeous but there’s so much more that makes Key West unique.

Including a walking tour will create memories and conversations about Key West was an amazing vacation.

Don’t just visit Key West, experience it! Make Key West become a part of you.

FAQ

What is the best walking tour of Key West?

Tough question to answer. Read the reviews to make sure you’re dealing with an honest company and then find a tour that looks the most fun to you.
There are a ton of options. We can’t say which one is the best for you.
Always use the reviews to make sure a company is good. If you feel you can trust a company, give it a try.

Are Self-Guided Walking Tours of Key West safe?

On Key West, yes you can feel confident you’ll be safe. Always pay attention, avoid dark areas, and avoid areas if your gut tells you to.

Self-Guided and GPS Guided tours are more likely to occur in the daytime.

Is a walking tour a good experience for kids?

Walking tours are an amazing experience for kids! They like to be out moving and experiencing. A walking tour is a perfect way for a child to learn the way they naturally do. A walking tour will let them explore, read, and move around, experiencing the actual history.

What’s the least expensive way to do a walking tour?

That’s gonna be a self-guided tour and we’ve got a pretty good one set up for you earlier in the article.

Be ready to call up Wikipedia if you need more info about any destination.

You can set up a fantastic tour that your family will remember if you start with a plan and do a bit of googling along the way.

Cautions

If you don’t have a guide, most of these tours will be during the day.

If you have a guide in Key West, you should be safe. For any other type of tour make sure you pay attention to your surroundings and what is going on.

In Key West mostly you’re safe but just be aware of your environment. If anything makes you nervous, trust your gut.

Summary & other places of interest

I hope Key West gives you incredible sunsets and sunrises, some nice cocktails, and memorable stories that your friends will enjoy. I hope you find a lot of satisfaction in your Key West and Florida Keys vacation.

This is such a fun destination and I wish everyone could visit at least once.

Enjoy the different bars and restaurants and make sure to stay safe.

Key West is probably the most practical place on the planet to have a walking tour.

Other places to check out while you’re in the area are Smather’s Beach and the Key West Nature Preserve.

If your vacation includes mainland Florida in the Miami or Fort Lauderdale areas, I recommend checking other attractions like Everglades National Park, and the Homestead Bayfront Park.

Even taking this little drive from Miami to Fort Lauderdale gives some incredible views.

Walking tours are nothing new for travelers — I hope Key West is the first of many experiences where you immerse yourself in the destination.

Visit Deer Lodge Montana (EASIEST stop on I-90) /montana/deer-lodge/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 05:22:28 +0000 /?p=140 Read more]]> Deer Lodge offers everything I need on a trip across Montana on I-90. Restaurants are great and my kids can get out of the car and run around. Deer Lodge has a couple of museums, and a few parks and the scenery is gorgeous! If you want to spend a little time exploring nature, Montana’s Deer Lodge is a great place to start.

Deer Lodge, Montana

Deer Lodge is a city of about 3,100 located between Missoula, Helena, and Butte Montana. It’s a quaint little town that provides travelers easy access to amenities and services. Plus, it offers some great recreation, including mountain hiking, golf, and a skate park. Other destinations of choice include museums with prison and automobile themes.

Amazingly enough, this little gem of a town is the second oldest in Montana.

Easiest Stop Between Missoula & Butte

This is why I know the city well. It’s a great stopping point if you’re traveling on I-90. A frequent journey for me. It’s not busy and it’s convenient to get a lot done.

If kids need to get out of the car there are a couple of fast food restaurants and some small stores.

If you need to be outdoors moving around, there are safe, fun parks throughout Deer Lodge and interesting museums.

Deer Lodge even installed a skate park in 2022. There are plenty of options to stretch your legs, move around, and enjoy the beautiful Montana scenery before you continue on your trip.

One of my favorite ways to make the drive when I’ve got a little bit of slack in my timing is to go to Subway, grab sandwiches for everyone, then picnic in the park. The kids play on the jungle gyms, I walk around, and we all burn off some energy. Then we get into the care completely refreshed and continue on our way.

Deer Lodge is such a beautiful destination and the break from driving is time well spent.

Deer Lodge Museums

Deer lodge has a surprising number of museums that visitors rave about in different reviews. You could spend the whole day visiting all of them or take in 1 for a good break.

The two most popular are the prison museum and the auto museum.

But there are 3 other museums that patrons walk away from feeling like they learned a lot and experienced a bit of nostalgia

 • Frontier Montana: Museum that is everything Cowboy! Focuses on frontier life from a bygone area. A collection of handguns spurs, chaps, and the Western Frontier.
 • Yesterday’s Play Things: Museum that deep dives into 60+ years of toys. You walk away missing some treasures from your youth.
 • Powell County Museum

These museums are run by The Powell County Museum and Arts Foundation. Deer Lodge has other historical sites such as the Grant-Kohrs Ranch.

In addition to a former cellblock building, the museum complex includes a theater, antique and automobile museums, and a former Milwaukee Road “Little Joe ” electric locomotive.

Deer Lodge Prison Museum

This is history everyone in the family will want to learn!

You can see the old Montana State Prison – the old foundation, the old walls, where the cells were. It’s not quite Alcatraz, but you can feel what this site’s purpose was.

The former prison pops out at you as you drive through the main street in town. On a warm summer day, many people are exploring the museum. Well worth the stop, and gives you plenty to think about if you’ve got the time.

The old prison and its museum are in Deer Lodge. The new Montana State Prison is a few miles away and no longer a large presence in the Deer Lodge community.

Deer Lodge Auto Museum

Car enthusiasts comment on how they’ve never seen so many cars (over 200) and are shocked there are brands they’ve never heard of.

It’s hard not to become a car enthusiast after visiting.

Grant-Kohrs Ranch

This is a national historic site, with guided tours available, but they can fill up any given day. The self-guided tours are a good substitute.

The ranch was founded around the time of the Oregon trail after Johnny Grant figured out cattle thrived here during the cold winters.

There are many experiences here to be had such as sitting in a covered wagon, seeing how the cooking operation woodwork, and what cowboy life was like out on the open range.

It’s fascinating to see how bouncy and comfortable the seat on a covered wagon was. The seats were not as rigid as they appear.

Deer Lodge Scenery & Outdoors

Montana offers a plethora of wildlife and it’s all available in the Deer Lodge area. It’s possible to see herds of elk, mule & whitetail deer, black bears, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and antelope. Elk and deer are the animals you’re most likely to see.

There are nearby mountain ranges for hiking, and it’s possible to take close-up pictures of animals.

Fishing in the area is wonderful, especially with the Clark Fork River nearby. Hunting is also available in Deer Lodge.

Keep these places in mind as well:

 • Warm Springs Wildlife Management Area
 • Spotted Dog Wildlife Management Area
 • Lost Creek State Park
 • Fairmont Hot Springs

Deer Lodge Parks

 • Jaycee Park: Park with older play equipment. Great place to spend an hour with some beautiful scenery
 • Little Joe: Named after the Little Joe Locomotive in the local museum.
 • Central Park Center: this is a pool and fitness Center
 • Cottonwood City Park
 • Skate Park: John and Dorothy Wilson Memorial Skate Park on Higgins Avenue. Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam fame helped fund this park.

Rivers

Clark Fork river & Blackfoot River confluence is near Deer Lodge.

Deer Lodge Golf Course (aka Deer Park Golf Course)

This is a small golf course for the community. If you’re trying to check off all the golf courses in Montana or just want to spend the day golfing, it provides beautiful mountain scenery.

Otherwise, there are nicer golf courses that are a closer drive.

Restaurants in Deer Lodge

 • Prison Pizza: homemade pizza sauce from scratch? What’s not to love about this prize of a pizza parlor in Deer Lodge? This one’s a great stop you’re not gonna find better pizza at the two big cities on either tip of your drive.
 • Corner Bar: great little bar with live music some evenings and outdoor seating during the summer months
 • Kaffeination Station: stop for coffee and a quick meal. Surprisingly great reviews on their Philly Cheesesteak.
 • Broken Arrow Steakhouse: steak houses and small cities can be pretty hit-and-miss. I found Broken Arrow steakhouse to be pretty good and cooked correctly. Some reviews show not everyone feels this way, but I recommend trying it.

Deer Lodge Dates to be Aware Of

The Deer Lodge Prison & Auto Museums are currently closed for maintenance, reopening March 3, 2023. Fun starts the next day at the museum with a children’s play on March 4.

Traveling to Deer Lodge

Deer Lodge is an easy destination to travel to. I assume that’s one of the reasons this thriving community exists.

If you’re traveling from Butte or Missoula, it will just be a long I-90. Same for Helena Montana but you will take Highway 12 first to get to I-90.

Stop Lights Flash

One of my favorite things about small towns like Deer Lodge is when it’s not peak driving hours there’s no need for stoplights.

Instead of waiting for stoplight timers on streets that aren’t currently busy, the stoplights flash and let the driver know whether they need to yield at the light.

I like it because it’s more efficient and it is refreshing to be a little less beholden to technology.

I’ve seen this in a few cities over the years and I’ve also seen the cities grow and eliminate this stoplight behavior. I miss the simplicity.

History

I was quite surprised when I found out Deer Lodge is the second oldest town in Montana.

Amongst the prison, museums, and the Grant-Kohrs ranch, you can learn a lot about the history of Deer Lodge.

The Powell County Website has a great page that covers the history of Deer Lodge and provides insite into how this part of the West was settled.

FAQ

What should I do in Deer Lodge?

If you have a lot of time, absolutely visit one of the museums. If not have a picnic in the park, move around, enjoy the scenery, and then be on your way.

What’s the best place to stop in Deer Lodge?

In my opinion, a short visit to Prison Pizza. If you have a long time, then check out the grant Grant-Kohrs Ranch- I don’t think there’s a better way to experience Montana’s history.

Summary & other places of interest

Deer Lodge is a small town that offers a lot of amenities whether you are passing through or in town for a couple of days.

The outdoor recreation is phenomenal as are the chances to connect the history on display.

With close proximity to three major cities in Montana, Deer Lodge may be worth spending a little time in if you are already in Missoula, Helena, or Butte. Spending a day hiking in the Deer Lodge and then getting back to the Kettlehouse Amphitheater for a concert would be an incredible day.

Mesquite Nevada (BETTER trip than Las Vegas) /nevada/mesquite/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 20:28:32 +0000 /?p=134 Read more]]> Is it a mini Las Vegas? Mesquite offers a lot of what is available in Las Vegas but this town is cleaner and less crowded. Mesquite’s outdoor recreation is much better. The golf is amazing year-round and it is rejuvenating to hit a trail in the desert mountains. If you get the chance to go to a sports tournament here, do it! You will fall in love with this city.

Mesquite Nevada

Mesquite is a small town on the Arizona and Nevada border, that offers a great weekend vacation. Mesquite provides easy access to casinos and other gaming to the residents of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Mesquite offers excellent golf in the winter, and many sports tournaments are held here in accommodating weather.

Mesquite is about 30 minutes from St. George, Utah, and 90 minutes from Las Vegas. It offers many amenities Las Vegas is known for but on a smaller scale, and with smaller crowds.

The main 3 casinos are the Virgin River, Eureka, and Casablanca. Each of these casinos offers what you’d expect in a Nevada resort.

Enjoy a massage at one of Mesquite’s poolside spas.

If you’re looking for a couple of days of gaming, Las Vegas is probably the better choice. If your primary reason for travel is golf, I think you’ll have a better vacation in Mesquite.

Other Attractions in Mesquite

Some of the unique attractions include

 • Donkey Museum – surprisingly interesting if you need something to fill an hour or less, and some great picture opportunities with the kids.
 • Little Mount Rushmore
 • Mesquite Regional Sports and Event Complex

Mesquite also offers easy access to many National Parks in the area including

 • Zion National Park
 • Bryce National Park
 • Grand Canyon National Park

More than 1 million visitors a year escape to Mesquite. Many visitors fly into Las Vegas and take the short drive up Interstate 15.

Further north is Saint George, Utah and its nearby, spectacular National Parks.

It is equally common for visitors from the Boise and Salt Lake airports to drive to Mesquite for a few days of golf.

Mesquite has a small satellite campus of the University of Southern Nevada here.

Mesquite Golf

Mesquite is home to seven world-class, golf courses.

From 1995 to 2015, the World Long Drive Association showcased its long golf-ball driving distance events at the Mesquite Regional Sports and Event Complex.

There is something about a green golf oasis in the desert that accentuates a golf course’s beauty.

With Mesquite’s eating and entertainment options, formal clothing is often appropriate, but don’t forget your play clothes!

Outdoor Adventures in Mesquite

Retrace the path of the old Spanish Trail or discover forests of Joshua trees – both are available in motorized vehicles or hiking.

Skydiving is available and the desert look amazing from that high.

Miami to Fort Lauderdale (the FASTEST and SCENIC Directions) /florida/miami-to-fort-lauderdale/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 18:52:38 +0000 /?p=131 Read more]]> When I make this drive, sometimes I want to get there fast, sometimes I want to take the scenic route. Sometimes, I just want to skip paying for Florida’s toll roads. I’ve got all the insights for getting from Miami to Fort Lauderdale!

Miami to Fort Lauderdale

A basic driving trip from Miami to Fort Lauderdale takes about 40 minutes to an hour. Rush hour usually isn’t too bad- a little more than an hour at most. The scenic way to get there is taking the A1A to Dania Beach, but there are times this can be a frustrating route.

Exploring these to gem cities of Florida is high on the bucket-list of many people.

There isn’t what I’d consider a good bus option.

 • Driving: 40 minutes to an Hour
 • Rush Hour: 1 to 1.5 hours
 • No Tolls: 40 minutes to an hour
 • Train: 30 to 90 minutes depending on point of origination
 • Other Public Transportation: no legitimate options – Grey Hound does have a route, but requires transportation to the bus station.
 • Biking: 3.5 to 4 hours. Recommend biking on the A1A
 • Walking: 12+ hours. This is going to be 30+ miles and longer than a marathon. Would be interested to hear from anyone who has actually walked this.

Getting to Fort Lauderdale by Car

Miami to Fort Lauderdale: Driving the fastest route

The direct route to Fort Lauderdale is pretty easy: take Interstate 95. If it is currently rush hour, you’re going to want to take the express tollway. But if you’re traveling during less busy times you should be fine and get there just as fast.

The Scenic Drive to Fort Lauderdale

There are a lot of cars but a couple of routes worth seeing.

Recommend Alton Road or A1A but aggressive drivers can get frustrating.

It’s great at the beginning to see Big Pink to your right. The entire drive is peppered with residential units & hotels.

I love seeing the Fontainebleau. I think of the iconic card game between James Bond and Goldfinger every time.

You may want to avoid this drive during certain times of the year (cough… spring break).

No Tolls: Miami to Fort Lauderdale

This is not much different than the fastest direct route above. Just make sure you don’t get on the express lanes. If it makes it easier, select the no tolls feature on your GPS. However, keeping an eye out for the signs is simple.

Train from Miami to Fort Lauderdale

It’s possible to take a combination of Miami Metrorail and the Brightline Express Train to make this trip. It would cost from about $23 to $45 each way — possibly higher depending on where you start and end in each city.

The Brightline train will eventually connect Miami to Orlando.

Biking to Fort Lauderdale

This route is similar to the scenic driving route. Take the options that keep you closest to the ocean.

Walking to Fort Lauderdale

I’m not sure this is even advisable. If this is something you want to do because you enjoy the scenery and distance, you would be better off signing up for the Miami Marathon. It has similar access to Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and would be a gorgeous run.

If this is something that you have done, we would love to hear about it please reach out on Twitter or Facebook and let us know how it was.

FAQ

What is the BEST Travel Option from Miami to Fort Lauderdale?

I recommend driving.

Miami is big. Fort Lauderdale is big. Florida is big! Take a car.

The train may work if you’re just going to visit one area and it will be easy to get around after you arrive.

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery or a drive in nature, you would be better off getting out of these areas anyway. The car will be more practical.

Is there good public transportation?

Brightline is decent, but still not convenient compared to public transportation in other parts of the country. That is not unique to this part of the world.

Travel in this area largely occurs by car.

Cautions

No cautions unique to this article. As in any major metropolitan area, be safe. Lock your car doors, hide your valuables, and stay in well-lit areas.

Much of the driving will be congested. There is some gorgeous scenery and beautiful architecture, but keep your eyes on the road.

Summary

There are many more destinations in this part of Florida to explore. Miami & Fort Lauderdale are hot destinations and both offer amazing experiences.

If you’re in Miami, for art check out the Pérez Art Museum or the Wynwood Walls. You’ve also got HistoryMiami Museum and Little Havana.

On the Fort Lauderdale side of this trip, check out the Museum of Discovery and Science, or the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens.

And of course, both places are covered in beaches and ocean parks!

KettleHouse Amphitheater (GORGEOUS Venue in Montana) /montana/kettlehouse-amphitheater/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 07:26:50 +0000 /?p=118 Read more]]> I had a couple of days to kill in Montana and needed to get out of the hotel. Instead, I found the most gorgeous concert venue and I can’t wait to bring my wife back to check out KettleHouse!

KettleHouse Amphitheater

Kettlehouse Amphitheater is a concert venue set along the Blackfoot River, nestled in the Montana mountains. It is outside of Missoula Montana and hosts a wide variety of performances, including concerts, films, and comedians. The amphitheater is also available for private rentals and has 4,250 seats.

If you enjoy music and you enjoy the outdoors, you’re going to love this venue. And if you’re a fan of outdoor parties in the summer, you may buy tickets for every event in the future!

Performances

There are many different events & concerts at the amphitheater. Various forms of rock music are the most common- country, classic, alternative, hard, and metal. There are also comedians performing and independent films previewed at the KettleHouse Amphitheater.

Acts at KettleHouse have included Sheryl Crow, Death Cab for Cutie, The Goo Goo Dolls, and The Black Crowes.

Food & Refreshments

KettleHouse provides the refreshment options you’d want at an outdoor gathering.

Burgers, Brats, Fries, and Bar-b-Que. Great food in a great atmosphere.

And then you’ll be blown away by what is available to drink.

Soft Drinks, of course. Yet, what other theaters have you been to that has an onsite brewery? Enjoy beer brewed onsite, wine, cocktails, and hard-seltzers.

The amphitheater’s location in the mountains combined with the catering makes for a memorable party.

Missoula Mountains

Missoula is already a special place as it’s the meeting point of five different mountain ranges. When set on the Blackfoot river as well, it’s hard to describe Kettlehouse amphitheater as anything else but special.

When you’re at the amphitheater, you can see three of the Rangers. Behind the theater, across the river is Marshall mountain. To the right is Bonner Mountain and on the left is University Mountain. This is where the rivers, three different rivers, meet up as well.

Travel To KettleHouse Amphitheater

Address: 605 Cold Smoke Lane, Bonner, MT 59823.

The drive to KettleHouse Amphitheater is a short drive from Missoula. There’s even a $10 shuttle if you prefer.

Head East on I-90 as you leave Missoula. Take the Highway 200 exit which you’ll get to very quickly. After just under 2 miles, turn left on Cold Smoke Avenue.

You’ll see the amphitheater and be directed to parking.

Parking

If you’re there for an event, you’ll likely be directed to a dirt parking lot on the left. There is a smaller lot on the right which may be used if you’re there in business or attending a private event (depending on the event’s size).

From the Parking Lot

It’s easy to see the amphitheater and walk to the venue. Though the area around the KettleHouse Amphitheater is gorgeous and you may want to stroll around if you have time.

KettleHouse Amphitheater History

Ground was broken for the amphitheater in October 2016 and the first concert, featuring Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, was on July 13, 2017.

Acts at KettleHouse have included Sheryl Crow, Death Cab for Cutie, The Goo Goo Dolls, and The Black Crowes.

Big Sky Brewing opened up 5,000 seat amphitheater that same year after hearing about the KettleHouse going up about 12 miles away. Ticket sales have been strong for both venues since they were established.

Summary & other destinations of interest

Nearby, you have Big Sky Brewing’s Amphitheater – also in Missoula. Which is just slightly bigger.

In nearby Bozeman, The Rialto offers special performances.

If you’re exploring the West or other outdoor amphitheaters there are quite a few outdoor concert venues with similarly majestic settings. The most famous is probably The Red Rock in Colorado. Followed closely by Tuacahn in St. George, Utah.

Mermaid Caves (Incredible Oahu ADVENTURE) /oahu/mermaid-cave-adventure/ Fri, 30 Dec 2022 04:21:23 +0000 /?p=93 Read more]]> If you’re looking for something a bit adventurous on Oahu, the Mermaid caves near Nanakuli Beach and Electric Beach might be exactly the activity you’re looking for. These caves are something straight out of a movie and a great stop as long as your party can handle a little climbing and are comfortable swimmers.

Mermaid Caves on Oahu

The Mermaid Caves are on the western side of Oahu near Nanakuli Beach. Parking is available at this and other beach parks in the area. The caves are a feature within the lava rock shore, so make sure you have shoes that can handle the wet, rocky terrain.

Use Caution

Mermaid Cave Ladder

Any kids visiting the mermaid caves should probably be at least 10 years old. I want to call out early that while this is an amazing destination, it does require some planning. Natural forces that formed this attraction are still present and can be precarious.

This is a great destination that most should be able to handle if they’re over about 10 years, decent swimmers, and have the necessary footwear to walk across the rocks.

These caves do fill up with water when the tide or swell is high, so be prepared to not enter if ocean water is high or rising.

Positively Gorgeous

The caves a spectacularly gorgeous. I’m convinced the reason they aren’t in a movie is it would be difficult to get cameras in and time filming with the tides.

Mermaid Caves is an absolutely fitting name. The light rays filtered through the rock ceiling shine deep into the glorious blue pools.

The pools themselves are deep and the hidden beach awakens both wonder and a sense of being on your own adventure.

Mermaid Cave Ladder
Mermaid Cave Ladder

The Mermaid Caves were formed by ocean water waves eroding the side of the rock cliffs and leaving an overhanging ceiling. Once deep enough under the rock, a sand beach was formed.

The beach is secret for a few reasons.

The caves will only fit a few swimmers at a time. This area could quite easily become too crowded.

Additionally, it does take some work to get there — most anyone could, but you’re going to want to have the right gear.

Once you drop through the hole in the roof the waves are lapping at the beach underneath the rock.

Travel To the Mermaid Caves

Very easy to get to this area Oahu. Arriving on the local bus would also be an option.

Driving

The Mermaid Caves are on the West Side of Oahu, which tends to get less traffic than many other locations on the Island. Take the H1 Freeway around Pearl Harbor and continue toward Ewa Beach – eventually, this turns into Highway 93. Take the highway to Nanakuli Beach Park or any of the other beaches in the area.

There aren’t any turns until you get to the parking lot.

Parking

Since this side of the island is less crowded, you should have no problem parking in the lots dedicated to the local beaches.

Walking to the Caves

You should be able to drop a pin on a maps-app exactly where the caves are, and have the app lead you correctly. I never leave my phone in the car, so I’d recommend taking yours even if you know exactly where to go (Pro Tip: Have a waterproof bag for your phone.)

From the parking lot of Nanakul Beach take the sidewalk towards the ocean and once you get to the lava rock cliffs turn right and begin walking on the cliffs themselves. Make sure you have appropriate shoes for this portion.

The mermaid caves are about even with the second home lot.

H2 FAQ

Caution is warranted. It’s a good idea to know when the tides are going to be going out and time your visit around that. Also, any children should be at least 10 to 12 years old and anyone entering the caves should be a competent swimmer.

Knowing when the tides will be going out can help you plan the timing of your visit. Additionally, anyone entering the caves should be a proficient swimmer and any minors should be between the ages of 10 and 12.

How were the Caves Made?

They were created by the forces of erosion they are the waves tunneled under the tall lava-rock cliffs. At some point, this rock roof will likely crumble, but that does not seem imminent.

Why are the Caves Secret?

Many reasons. The real answer is they aren’t published, but not necessarily secret.

The caves aren’t advertised since there isn’t a business tied to them. Many natural landmarks in Hawaii are equally secret and social media is exposing those locations to more explorers.

Also, since caution is warranted, there are plenty of families that skip this attraction.

Summary & Nearby Attractions

The Mermaid Caves are gorgeous. As long as conditions allow and your entire party feels up to the task, I definitely recommend a visit.

The lighting inside is majestic. You feel like you’re in a movie automatically beginning an adventure.

As long as everyone is capable of handling them, the Mermaid Caves will be a memorable visit for everyone.

Nearby Attractions

On the western side of Oahu there are many other things to see and do. I’ve seen whales and dolphins over here. Depending on the time of year, the beaches may be calmer over here than on other sides of the island. Since you’re already likely in swimming attire, I’d recommend spending a few hours at one of the beaches over here.

The town of Maili is a little further along Highway 93 – from there to the end of the highway are many lookouts and beaches to see an incredible sunset.

You can take an easy hike to the Maili Pillbox or visit the Wainae Harbor.

After the caves, if you’re hungry, check out Spinners Cafe, the Spice House, or grab shave ice at Dan’s Maile Shave Ice.
